Local Help in Williamson County, TX

For many Williamson County homeowners, September 24, 2023 is the storm they remember. NOAA's records put 4-inch hail in Round Rock that day from a supercell that did considerable damage between Georgetown and Austin, with losses in Austin, Georgetown and Round Rock estimated at upward of $600 million across Williamson and Travis counties. It was one of 37 hail days the agency logged in the county from 2015 to 2024: 130 reports in all, 23 of them 2 inches or larger, including another 4-inch stone at Coupland on May 30, 2024.

The county sets few construction rules for houses. Its FAQ says Williamson County hasn't adopted the state's residential building code standards for unincorporated areas, doesn't require new homes there to meet any building code, and has no zoning. Cities are a different matter; Round Rock, for example, currently lists the 2024 International Residential Code as adopted. Requests from Georgetown, Hutto, Taylor, Liberty Hill, Jarrell and the rest of the county are forwarded to independent garage door providers. The Austin page covers the metro core.

Williamson County Service Details

What providers in this area actually see: coverage, common jobs, local pricing factors, and rules worth knowing.

Service Area Notes

  • We accept requests county-wide, including the northern and eastern towns: Georgetown, Jarrell, Florence, Hutto, Taylor, Granger, Thrall, Coupland and Weir, along with Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Liberty Hill and Brushy Creek.
  • The Census Bureau lists Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Pflugerville and Austin as partly in Travis County, Bartlett as partly in Bell, and Thorndale as partly in Milam. Check which city and county your address is in before asking about permits.
  • Which independent provider picks up a request depends on who is working your part of the county.

Common Jobs in Williamson County

  • Replacing hail-dented steel sections and broken glass in the top section
  • Full door replacement when large hail has damaged most sections or the model is discontinued
  • Track realignment and roller replacement after a door is struck or forced
  • Torsion spring and lift cable replacement
  • Opener, wall button and photo-eye troubleshooting
  • Itemized damage write-ups to support a homeowner's insurance claim after a hail day

What Drives Pricing Here

  • The number of damaged sections and glass panels, and whether matching sections can still be ordered
  • Whether a city permit and inspection apply; outside city limits there's no county building code for houses
  • Section construction and insulation if the door is replaced rather than repaired
  • Whether the track, struts or opener rail were bent along with the panels

Permits & Local Rules

  • Williamson County's FAQ says the county has not adopted Subchapter F (residential building code standards for unincorporated areas) under Local Government Code Chapter 233, so it doesn't require new residential construction to follow any building code. The county also has no zoning authority and doesn't issue certificates of occupancy. If you're in a city or its ETJ, check with the city.
  • In unincorporated areas, the County Engineer's Office requires a Certificate of Compliance for structures or other development outside the floodplain, and a Floodplain Development Permit within or next to the 100-year floodplain (512-943-3330). Inside city limits, the city has floodplain jurisdiction. Neither covers garage door replacement explicitly.
  • The county fire code (2018 International Fire Code, adopted for unincorporated areas in November 2020) applies to public, commercial and multifamily buildings of four or more units, not single-family homes.
  • Round Rock's Building Inspection Division (512-218-5550) lists the 2024 IRC and IBC as adopted, and will confirm whether an address is inside city limits, in an ETJ, or in unincorporated Williamson County.

Climate & Housing Notes

  • April and May usually bring the most hail reports in the county's record, but the 2023 storm moved September into second place for 2015–2024 (43 April, 31 September and 28 May reports out of 130).
  • Sixteen tornadoes appear in the NCEI record for the county over the same decade, three of them rated EF2.
  • FEMA's revised flood maps for the Brushy Creek watershed and parts of the San Gabriel River watershed took effect December 20, 2019; the county notes that many other Zone A floodplains have never had a detailed study.
  • At the Georgetown Lake station, NOAA's 1991–2020 normals show about 112 days a year at 90°F or above, about 28 nights at or below freezing, and 37.08 inches of precipitation.

Emergency Response Expectations

If a hailstorm or a failed spring leaves the door hanging crooked, wedged open, or holding your vehicle in, describe that in the request. Independent providers receive it, and how quickly one can get there depends on their schedules, which can stretch after a county-wide hail day.

Williamson County FAQs

Does Williamson County inspect garage door replacements?

Not for houses outside city limits. The county hasn't adopted a residential building code for unincorporated areas, and its permits there deal with floodplain status, driveways and commercial fire code. Inside Georgetown, Round Rock, Hutto or another city, ask that city's building office what a door replacement needs.

Can just the hail-broken glass section be replaced?

Often it can, if the manufacturer still makes that section in your size, design and color. Bring the door's label information or the original paperwork if you have it. If the glass section is discontinued or other sections are also dented, ask the provider to lay out the repair and replacement options in writing.

I'm just outside Round Rock or Georgetown. Whose rules apply?

It depends on whether the lot is inside city limits, in the city's extraterritorial jurisdiction, or in unincorporated county. The county FAQ tells residents in a city or its ETJ to check with that city, and Round Rock's Building Inspection Division will verify an address on request.
