Motor RPM sensor fault / motor overheated
A LiftMaster or Chamberlain 1 up-arrow, 5 down-arrow flash means the logic board isn't seeing motor rotation — the classic symptom is a door that moves six to eight inches and stops dead. Behind it is either a thermal overload that shut the motor down or an RPM sensor that's failed and can no longer report that the motor is turning. Both leave the opener refusing to complete travel.
Start with the free step: unplug the opener for about 30 minutes to let a thermal trip reset, then retest. If the code returns, do the manual lift test with the door closed, because a heavy or binding door — usually a failing spring — is often what strained the motor in the first place. The RPM sensor and motor live inside the head and are pro territory; a tech can also tell you whether the real fix is the opener or the door balance.
- Meaning
- The board isn't seeing motor rotation — the door typically moves 6–8 inches and stops. Either the motor overheated or the RPM sensor has failed.
- Likely fix
- Unplug the opener for 30 minutes to reset a thermal trip, then retest. If the code returns, the RPM sensor or motor needs replacement — but first make sure the door itself isn't binding or spring-heavy (manual lift test with the door closed).
- DIY or pro
- Pro — internal motor-head parts, and a heavy door (failing spring) is often the real culprit behind the strain.
Code tables vary by model year — confirm against your model's manual (model number is on the motor head, under the light lens). Unplug the opener before touching any wiring.
